Periodontal disease is considered a common dental pathology that is easy to contract if proper oral hygiene is not maintained. Please read the following article to better understand periodontal disease and how to definitively treat this condition.
What is periodontal disease?
Periodontal disease is recognized as one of the most common oral diseases. This condition frequently affects middle-aged and elderly individuals, and it is also the primary cause of tooth loss in older adults.
Periodontitis develops when the gums become inflamed and dense dental plaque and tartar accumulate at the root of the tooth, preventing the gums from tightly attaching to the tooth root and resulting in gum recession. At this point, the tooth roots become increasingly exposed along the dental arch.
Periodontitis destroys the supporting tissues of the teeth and deteriorates the alveolar bone, causing the teeth to become loose and misaligned. Furthermore, periodontal disease causes halitosis (bad breath), leading many individuals to lose confidence in their work and daily lives.

Common signs of periodontal disease
Periodontal disease is considered an inflammatory pathology of the gingival tissue and tooth-supporting structures. Typical manifestations of this disease include easily bleeding gums, red and inflamed gingiva, tooth mobility, and eventually tooth loss.
- Bleeding and swollen, red gums
- Toothache and gum pain
- Unpleasant breath odor
- Loose or mobile teeth
- Tartar accumulation near the tooth roots
- Abnormal sensation while chewing.

If left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to complications affecting the temporal regions, making it difficult for patients to eat and chew, and increasing the risk of gastric disorders.
Patients with periodontal disease typically progress through 4 stages
Stage 1: This is the stage where dental plaque and tartar form, allowing bacteria to accumulate along the tooth necks and interdental spaces. This stage is considered the onset of periodontitis, and patients often do not notice any unusual oral symptoms.
Stage 2: Inflammation begins to develop, causing the gums to swell and bleed easily during tooth brushing or eating.

Stage 3: Bacteria proliferate extensively, forming swollen periodontal pockets accompanied by pus formation.
Stage 4: Alveolar bone and periodontal ligaments are destroyed by bacteria, causing the gums to recede significantly. Teeth become severely loose and eventually fall out.
Periodontal treatment procedure at JW Hospital
Step 1: The dentist examines and assesses the patient’s periodontal condition.
Step 2: The dentist determines the severity of the disease and issues appropriate indications via dental X-rays (if indicated).
Step 3: The dentist treats the periodontal disease using the most appropriate clinical methods, depending on the severity level.

For moderate cases, the dentist performs oral prophylaxis around the gingival tissues and teeth, followed by scaling and root planing (calculus removal) and home-care guidance.
In severe cases, tooth extraction may be necessary to prevent complications affecting adjacent teeth.
Step 4: Follow-up examination and condition monitoring according to the dentist’s instructions.

Post-treatment care following periodontal therapy
To prevent recurrence after definitive treatment, patients must pay close attention to dental care following periodontal therapy. Specifically:
+ Maintaining thorough oral hygiene is the first critical step after periodontal treatment. Brush regularly and use dental floss to eliminate plaque.

+ Avoid smoking and excessive consumption of stimulants.
+ Maintain a balanced diet, avoiding foods high in sugar, acids, and refined carbohydrates.
+ Schedule periodic check-ups at the Dental Clinic to monitor your oral health and intervene promptly if there is any risk of recurrence.
